  • 2. Could you write an article listing the tool steels that are best suited for polishing?
  • The polishability of tool steels is influenced by several factors. Furthermore, when selecting a material, the primary consideration must always be that it meets the mechanical, chemical and economic requirements of the intended application.
    If I know these requirements (for example, the type of product, its material and the required surface quality), I can already assist during the design stage in selecting, from the feasible material options, the one that is likely to provide the best polishing performance.
    However, this decision is always made jointly with the tool designer and based on the specific application.
    For this reason, I cannot responsibly provide a general recommendation listing the "best polishable" tool steels, because such a list would ignore other criteria that may be equally important for the particular application. In other words, even with identical surface quality requirements, the same material may be an excellent choice for one application while being technically or economically unsuitable for another.
    The right material can only be selected by evaluating all application-specific requirements together.
  • 3. Why does surface quality matter, and what does it have to do with cycle time?
  • In response to a question regarding my "Surface and Cycle Time" article, I explain
    how the design and quality of a surface can, in certain cases, significantly influence the overall production cycle time.
    By overall cycle time, I do not mean only a single opening-closing cycle of the injection moulding machine, but rather the total production cycle, in other words, the total time required to manufacture a specified quantity of parts.
    This is particularly important in high-volume production, where fractions of a second saved during each cycle accumulate over months or years.
    With an optimized surface, the part may separate from the mould more easily without damage, allowing the cooling time to be reduced and the mould opening or ejection process to begin safely at an earlier stage. For example, if a given part currently requires 8 seconds of cooling time for reliable release, but thanks to an optimized surface the same result is achieved reliably after only 7.7 seconds, then 0.3 seconds have been saved per cycle. At first glance this may seem insignificant; however, over a production run of several hundred thousand or even millions of parts, it can result in production time savings measurable in hours, days, or even weeks.
    If, for example, a mould release agent has to be applied after every fifth part, the additional time required also becomes part of the overall cycle time and may result in delays of several days even in smaller production runs, especially if a part remains stuck in the mould and production has to wait until it cools sufficiently for the remaining material to be removed manually,
    not to mention the additional downtime if the mould is damaged and must be repaired before production can continue.
    For these reasons, although surface quality is usually not the primary factor, proper surface finishing can prevent significant losses and production problems over the long term with a one-time investment.
